FIRST TIME HOMEBUYER TAX CREDITS

Amount available: $8000 (or 10% of the value, whichever is lower) for first-time homebuyer (has not owned home in last three years)
For purchase of principle residence between January 1 & December 1, 2009
Recapture provision, only if home sold within three years
Must earn less than $75,000 individual/$150,000 family
Extends the option to claim 2009 home purchases on taxpayers' 2008 income tax returns
Eliminates the prohibition against buyers financing their home with the proceeds of tax-exempt bonds and claiming the tax credit. NOTE: This facilitates state and local housing finance agencies (HFAs) use of bonds to advance the tax credit as a short-term loan that can be used at the closing table. |
